BORICUA POET/EDUCAOR/ACTIVIST

Poeta Guerrera began writing at a young age. Her poetry ranges from spiritual to political to every day notions. She's most popular for her political pieces. She has self-published one book on lulu.com, "Ramas y Raices," and she is currently working on publishing two more books, one on her spiritual journey which details her journey to Islam and one that showcases her political work.

Melinda Gonzalez, has been writing poetry since she was about 10 years old, born to Puerto Rican parents and raised in Newark, New Jersey. Melinda graduated from Lafayette Street School, and then attended Science High School. She says "I will represent for Newark for the rest of forever even though I now find myself in New York City attending Barnard College, because it's important, in life, to never forget your roots.

"These days I find myself inspired by the Most High and beautiful people I have had the pleasure of meeting. I aspire to one day be the type of poetess that invokes people to action.I don't hope to be famous or any of that. I'm really just a woman who wants to raise my future children in a better world. I'm just one person, but that's how education and change start, you know."

Melinda Gonzalez and Liza Garza
"It was a joy just to be near the amazing Liza Garza"
